Background

In the construction sector there are many inconveniences with raw materials, one of them is in relation to the materials in the quarries that are quite difficult to measure in their storage and transportation.

The problem:

Risk in the guarantee of good construction and economic losses for investors, due to the lack of an efficient and accurate method to measure the volume of materials in the quarries.

The solution:

An augmented reality application that accurately measures piles of material and its functionality in a very simple and practical way for quarry workers.

How to achieve this solution?

Getting to know the users

Review from competitors, how they have addressed this problem and what possible gaps they are not covering in the pain points of their users.

Summary.

Business: Measurement and reporting company for quarry stockpiled construction materials.

Location: Settle, Washington USA

Method: Consists basically in the measurement of materials: aerial (Drone) and terrestrial (App), using iOS operating system for information processing.

UX Strengths:
Marketing: They have good communications deployed in different digital channels such as: website, and social networks (Facebook – Instagram – Twitter – LinkedIn – YouTube). They have a defined visual identity, which generates visual coherence.

App: The measurement allows the user to visualize in real time a 3D model of the pile.

UX weaknesses:
Marketing: Apparently they do not have a well-established strategy.
App: It is not available for Android, which could become a weakness although it depends on the business model.
At first glance, the App does not have a well elaborated UI design, it is not statically balanced, as it does not have established design laws such as: symmetrical or asymmetrical or layout parameters; which is a failure in the heuristics of User Experience Design.

Summary.

Business: It is a company dedicated to the measurement of volumes of materials in loaded trucks, its slogan is: We are obsessed with accurate information.

Location: Burbush, New Zealand

Method: Basically consists of measuring construction materials directly on the truck trailer using volumetric scanners.

UX Strengths:
Marketing: They have good communications deployed in different digital channels such as: website and social networks (Facebook – Twitter – LinkedIn – YouTube). They have a defined visual identity, which generates visual coherence.

UX weaknesses:
Marketing: It seems that they do not have a well-established strategy.
App: They do not have a mobile App, they only have the software for volumetric scanners, which could mean that their technology is not very affordable.
